Biography

Carlos D. Paternina-Arboleda is an Assistant Professor in the Fowler College of Business at San Diego State University. Previously, he was a Full Professor at Universidad del Norte in Colombia. He has a bachelor’s degree in industrial engineering from Universidad del Norte. He has a diploma of concentration studies in Engineering project Management from Universidad del Norte. He has a Master of Industrial Engineering and a Ph.D. in Industrial Engineering from University of South Florida, in Tampa, FL. He is a member of the editorial boards for Elsevier’s Supply Chain Analytics Journal and Elsevier’s Latin American Transport Studies Journal. He is also a member of the INFORMS Magazine Editorial Advisory Board. His ongoing research deals with AI-Driven optimization of Freight transportation systems, AI-driven Supply Chain analytics, and Smart Digital Port Decision Support Information Systems. His research methodologies include optimization, simulation, AI-driven analytics, and implementation of decision support systems. The core of his work relates to embedding intelligent cooperative agent structures, such as reinforcement learning algorithms, Ant Colony Systems, fictitious play (a game theoretical learning approach) and evolutionary algorithms for multi-objective optimization, within decision-making software tools for Supply Chain Analytics and Optimization. He has been a co-Chair for the 2008 CLAIO (Latino Ibero American Congress in Operations Research, and the 2019 ICCL (International Conference in Computational Logistics). He is also the co-Chair for the upcoming 2024 ICCL (Monterey, MX), and the 2026 PANAM (Pan-American Transportation and Logistics Congress), to be held in San Diego, CA.
