Biography

Steven M. McElhiney is the President of EWI Re, Inc., a subsidiary of NL Industries, Inc. (NYSE: NL), an industrial and chemical conglomerate.  EWI is a brokerage and risk management consultancy firm focused on supply chain and other complex risk categories and is a broker at Lloyd’s.   

Steve serves as the Chief Risk Officer for the parent company as well as the President of their Captive insurance company, Tall Pines Insurance Company of Vermont and EWI Re (UK), Ltd., EWI’s London based subsidiary.

Steve’s insurance industry experience spans over two decades with several global insurance groups.  He has served in the roles of CFO, Corporate Treasurer, Reinsurance division executive, and Board member.  He has chaired Catastrophe and Credit Committees with global organizations.

This year, Steve was elected to be the Vice-Chair of the Board of Captive Insurance Companies Association (“CICA”), the global association for captive insurance companies. He is a Past President and Chairman of the International CPCU Society (2011-2012), an association of insurance professionals with 24,000 members, and a Past Chairman of the Board of the Vermont Captive Insurance Association (2011-2013).

Steve has a Master of Business Administration in Corporate Finance and a Bachelor of Science, cum laude, from the University of Southern California. He is currently enrolled in the MS, GSCM online program at USC.

He authored “Fundamentals of Reinsurance and Reinsurance Markets” in 2012 (an IRMI publication).  Steve has been interviewed and quoted in a variety of insurance publications and is a frequent panelist at Reinsurance, Capital Markets, CPCU, Captive, and Risk Management industry events.
